About This Program

Building Livelihoods Through Animal Husbandry

The Livestock Program teaches community members in Mbuji-Mayi how to raise and care for animals including chickens, goats, and pigs. For many families, livestock is their most reliable source of protein and a critical buffer against economic hardship.

Participants learn everything from basic animal care through to disease prevention, breeding, and selling animals and animal products at market โ€” building a sustainable household income stream.

Outcomes

What Graduates Achieve

Livestock graduates build a reliable source of household food and income that keeps giving. A small flock of chickens or a pair of goats can transform a family's economic situation within months.

  • Regular supply of eggs, milk, or meat for household nutrition
  • Consistent income from selling animals and products at market
  • Ability to expand their livestock operation using microfinance loans
  • Reduced vulnerability to food price fluctuations
  • Skills to care for community animals and train others
Our Approach

The ABCD Method

All ACN programs use Asset-Based Community Development โ€” building on community strengths rather than focusing on deficits.

A

Assets

Identify the skills, knowledge, and resources already present in the community.

B

Build

Build on those assets through targeted training and practical, hands-on programs.

C

Connect

Connect participants with each other, with markets, and with ACN's microfinance fund.

D

Drive

Community members drive their own development โ€” ACN facilitates, the community leads.

Microfinance & Impact

Backed by Microfinance

Graduates of the Livestock Program are eligible for ACN microfinance loans to purchase their first animals and equipment. A small loan for starter chickens or goats can grow into a self-sustaining business within a year.

Participants often form peer support groups โ€” sharing knowledge, resources, and accountability as they grow their livestock operations together.
