Who We Are & Why We Exist

Our Mission & Vision

Everything ACN does is guided by a single belief โ€” that lasting change comes from within communities themselves. Our mission, vision, and values are the foundation of every decision we make.

"Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach him how to fish and you feed him for a lifetime."
โ€” The proverb that inspired the founding of AusCongo Network in 2008
Our Mission

Why ACN Exists

To empower Congolese people โ€” in Australia and in the Democratic Republic of Congo โ€” by building strong, sustainable communities through education, skills development, and community-led programs.

ACN was founded in 2008 on the belief that poverty is best addressed not by creating dependency, but by equipping people with the skills, knowledge, and resources to transform their own lives and communities.

We work with the community of Mbuji-Mayi in the DRC and with Congolese Australians in Brisbane โ€” delivering programs that build lasting capability, economic independence, and human dignity.

Everything we do is shaped by the people we serve. Their voices, strengths, and aspirations are at the centre of every program we design and deliver.

Our Vision

The Future We're Building Towards

A world where Congolese communities โ€” both in Australia and in the DRC โ€” are thriving, self-sufficient, and empowered to determine their own futures.

We envision communities in Mbuji-Mayi where every person has the skills and opportunity to earn a living, care for their family, and contribute to the growth of their community โ€” without depending on outside aid.

We envision a Congolese-Australian community in Brisbane that is connected, supported, and proud โ€” with full access to the services, resources, and opportunities they need to flourish in Australia.

And we envision a bridge between these two communities โ€” one that strengthens both and reminds us that empowerment knows no borders.

Our Values

The Principles That Guide Us

These values are not just words โ€” they shape how we work, how we relate to communities, and how we measure success.

๐Ÿ’ช

Empowerment

We believe every person has the capacity to shape their own future. Our role is to unlock that capacity โ€” not to do it for them. We build skills, confidence, and agency.

๐Ÿค

Partnership

Real change happens through genuine relationships. We work alongside communities โ€” not above them โ€” as partners who listen, learn, and grow together.

๐ŸŒฑ

Sustainability

We design programs that communities can own, operate, and grow independently. Short-term aid is not our goal โ€” lasting transformation is.

๐Ÿ†

Integrity

We are accountable to the communities we serve, to our donors, and to each other. We are honest, transparent, and committed to doing what we say we will do.

๐ŸŒ

Dignity

Every person deserves to be treated with respect, compassion, and recognition of their full humanity โ€” regardless of their background or circumstances.

๐Ÿ’ก

Innovation

We are always looking for better, more effective ways to create impact. We learn from experience, adapt our approach, and embrace creative solutions.

Our Approach

The ABCD Method โ€” Assets, Not Deficits

ACN uses the Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD) methodology โ€” an approach that starts by identifying what a community already has, rather than what it lacks.

A

Assets

We identify the existing strengths, skills, and resources within the community โ€” people, associations, institutions, and local knowledge.

B

Build

We build on those assets through targeted training, microfinance, and peer learning programs that strengthen what's already there.

C

Connect

We connect community members with each other, with markets, with resources, and with support networks that multiply their impact.

D

Drive

Community members drive their own development โ€” ACN facilitates, but the community leads. Ownership creates lasting, self-sustaining change.
